Catalonia launches a campaign against food waste

About 260,000 tons of food are wasted every year in Catalonia, which is equivalent to 35 kg per person. For this reason, the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Generalitat will this month promote the 'Aprofitem els aliments' campaign, in which 18 restaurants from all over the Catalan territory will participate.

In order to raise awareness and sensitize citizens, from September 26 to October 6, 18 Gastrorecup dinners or meals have been organized in Catalan establishments led by young chefs. The chef from La Semproniana, Ada Parellada, will be the godmother of each of these meetings, which will be open to everyone, and will provide support and training to the ambassador chefs.

Some of the restaurants that will participate in this initiative are Albert Guzman (La Ràpita), Bar Verat (Santa Coloma de Gramanet), Normal (Girona), El Terrat (Tarragona) and Can Xapes (Cornellà del Terri), as well as La Semproniana ( Barcelona). The dates on which these dinners or meals will be served, which will be made with food recovered in the fields and collected from surpluses in markets or local businesses in the area, can be consulted on the website, from where reservations can also be made.

The director general of Agri-food companies, quality and gastronomy of the Department of Action, Joan Gòdia i Tresánchez, has expressed the will to turn this campaign into "a point of reference" and "help raise awareness in the city of the great problem of food waste" .

Another event that will be held within the framework of this initiative is a large, popular and free lunch, which will take place in Plaza Corsini in the capital of Tarragona on October 7. Like Gastrorecup dinners or meals, it will be prepared with food recovered and suitable for consumption.

On October 8, on the other hand, the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda and the Espigoladors Foundation will organize the third marathon of

This campaign is part of Catalonia's Food Strategy, which aims to achieve a more sustainable, transformative food system based on the circular economy.
