Canet de Mar makes jam with the oranges from the fruit trees in the streets

The Environment Area of the Canet de Mar City Council (Maresme) has carried out an initiative to reduce waste generated in the streets, with the use of oranges from fruit trees distributed throughout the municipality to make orange marmalade. bitter

The initiative has the collaboration of the Fundació Espigoladors, an entity that fights against food waste, while making visible the work of the primary sector and generating job opportunities for people at risk of social exclusion. It takes its name from a historical practice to avoid waste that consists of collecting, by agreement with the producer, fruits and vegetables that are discarded from the commercial circuit due to production surpluses, decreased sales or aesthetic issues.

The main objective of this proposal for the recovery and transformation of bitter oranges from municipal street trees is to publicize this type of initiative, and thus raise awareness towards the culture of waste prevention, reuse and reduction of food waste. With this objective, the resulting jam will be used by the council to present visitors and representatives of other administrations, as well as for other citizen participation initiatives.
