Barceloneta beach dawns full of clothes due to a protest action by Open Arms

The NGO Open Arms worked tonight on a protest act in commemoration of the thousands of people who have lost their lives this year in the Mediterranean. The action covers the entire width of the beach sand to publicly denounce the humanitarian migration crisis that the world is experiencing.

More than 2,600 people throughout 2023 have been victims of being forced to seek a better life. The organizers, together with a group of more than a hundred volunteers, have carried out this criticism by pointing directly to the migration policies of the European Union.

Òscar Camps, founder of Open Arms, has expressed in a statement that the reality of those who flee their home in search of refuge cannot be ignored. "In 2023, 2,600 people have drowned in the Mediterranean trying to reach European shores in the absence of legal and safe routes," Camps states emphatically.

Furthermore, in his speech, he promoted the action Nobody should die at Xmas (nobody should die for Christmas, in Spanish), which aims to call for coherence during these important dates.

Camps explained that, this year, the NGO has had to restrict rescue missions due to the entity's economic situation, since donations have decreased. Despite this, he assures that Open Arms will go to sea to carry out maritime rescue tasks on December 22

The scenography of the protest action has been the work of the theater company La Fura dels Baus, which under the artistic direction of Carlus Padrissa, and with the collaboration of several entities, have devised this striking initiative.
