Aemet alert: this weekend's heat, a "rare phenomenon"

Spain faces an increase in temperatures this weekend, which will affect a large part of the country with maximums that will be around 35 degrees, especially in the Canary Islands. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a warning to be prepared for this "rare phenomenon", considered unusual for the time, especially in the north of the peninsula and the Canary Islands. "We are immersed in a warm episode that will get worse over the weekend," warned Rubén del Campo, spokesperson for the Aemet.

During Saturday and Sunday, numerous peninsular provinces will experience temperatures that will reach 30ºC, according to Aemet. In addition, an increase of up to 10ºC is expected in the eastern Cantabrian Sea, although regions such as Galicia and Asturias will not experience this rise. In the Canary Islands, thermometers could register up to 32ºC, especially in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and La Palma, which will have a warning for high temperatures.

Aemet has also highlighted the absence of frost at night, which reduces the usual nighttime cooling. This situation is accompanied by a very high ultraviolet index, which represents an additional risk for the population. Specialists recommend Spaniards protect their skin in case of prolonged exposure to the sun.

At a regional level, variable wind conditions are expected, with east winds in Alborán and strong intervals in the Strait, but in general it will be weak in the rest of the north, in the Balearic Islands and in the southeast of the peninsula. In the Canary Islands the breezes will predominate. This phenomenon not only affects Spain, but also extends to "large areas of southern Europe", according to the EFI index, which evaluates the rarity of meteorological phenomena.

For Sunday, temperatures are expected to remain similar to those of Saturday, with the intense heat continuing in most parts of the country.
