A Spanish transport truck runs over a popular barbecue near Rotterdam

At least three people have died this Saturday run over by a truck with Spanish registration belonging to a Murcia transport company while enjoying a neighborhood barbecue in the town of Nieuw-Beijerland, in the south of the Netherlands, near Rotterdam, as confirmed police sources to the Dutch Broadcasting Corporation (NOS).

For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the road and ended up in the celebration area. This morning the police did not rule out an increase in the number of fatalities.

The driver, who was uninjured, has been arrested and taken to the police station. The truck, which according to the police belongs to the Spanish transport company El Mosca, will be seized by the authorities for its technical review.

"The forensic investigation is underway. First, the investigators will inspect the site and then the truck will be lifted and impounded for investigation," the police said on their Twitter account.

At the time of the accident, a neighborhood barbecue was being held at the foot of a dam when the truck left the road. Police have avoided giving an exact number of victims or giving more details because the truck is still being removed.
