A father and son rescued in the Picos de Europa

A father and his 14-year-old son, residents of Avilés (Cantabria), have been rescued in the Picos de Europa national park, when they were trapped by snow and stuck in the Jenduda canal, in the central massif (the Cantabrian part), where they were located by the Civil Guard.

The agents of the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (Greim) of the Civil Guard had to rescue this Thursday afternoon, with symptoms of mild hypothermia, the father, 47 years old, and the son who could not move forward due to the storm. snow and the strong blizzard that was recorded in the area.

The Greim de Potes were alerted to the presence of these two people, warning that they could not advance or retreat due to the snow that had accumulated in the area in a few hours and the strong prevailing blizzard. To expedite the rescue of the two mountaineers, given the adverse weather conditions, the collaboration of the public company Cantur was requested to put the Fuente Dé cable car into operation, which was stopped due to the strong wind.

The Greim agents moved through the upper station of the cable car to speed up the rescue work and reach the Jenduda canal sooner, where the two mountaineers were. However, Civil Guard specialists had to overcome strong gusts of wind and snow.

Once the two mountaineers were located, the agents verified that they were in good physical condition, although they were beginning to show symptoms of mild hypothermia.

To guarantee the descent, the civil guards decided to put harnesses on them and secure them with ropes, to speed up the return to Fuente Dé, where the rescue was completed.
