Experience the possibilities of augmented reality and holographic telepresence at MWC

The digital transformation that we are currently experiencing offers endless new opportunities that we can now learn about by visiting the Mobile World Congress (MWC). Telefónica will be at this important world congress for another year, which will be held in Barcelona from February 27 to March 2, with an innovative proposal that will allow us to see how this authentic paradigm shift will take place in the field of telecommunications and what advantages it will bring. to society as a whole, and in particular to companies.

With the motto “Making Things Happen”, the company shows how it is already transforming its networks to turn them into service platforms and prepare them to take advantage of all the opportunities associated with the development of new technologies. Its intention is to highlight that the same capacity for transformation and innovation that has marked its history is what now guides its steps on a new journey towards the future.

Telefónica has an exhibitor of almost 1,000 m2, where visitors can discover its most disruptive proposals and success stories, as well as solutions aimed at making company activity easier, more efficient and sustainable. As a novelty, all those who attend the MWC in person will be able to visit its extended stand and enjoy an immersive augmented reality experience. Using HoloLens 2 glasses, they will access a special tour, accompanied by a guru in holographic format, to discover the value and capabilities of the new demos presented in this edition.

Thanks to the Making Network as a Service Happen demo we will be able to discover how Telefónica is converting its networks into interoperable and programmable platforms through open and standardized APIs (or application programming interfaces), which will give rise to a new wave of innovation for developers and creators of digital services.

Telefónica also brings its 3D holographic telepresence system to the MWC with Making Holographic Telepresence Happen, based on the combination of 5G, edge computing and fiber technologies. The company's stand houses at its heart a volumetric capture room that turns the visitor into a 3D avatar and “teleports” them in real time to augmented reality and virtual reality environments with different scenarios that can be followed on tablets and screens of the stand.

The company also offers specific solutions for precision agriculture, intelligent irrigation management or traceability and certification of the agricultural production process, applying IoT, artificial intelligence, cloud and blockchain. With the Making Smart Agro Happen demo, Telefónica has managed to recreate a vineyard in its stand with devices for monitoring climatic and soil conditions and also remote irrigation control.

This is not everything. Making Start Industry Happen is a simulation that represents a digital twin designed to optimize quality in the production of industrial parts, and that is capable of making decisions in real time thanks to 5G, edge computing, data analytics and machine learning technologies. This experience features a robotic arm, whose movements are synchronized with the virtually reproduced arm. It also has a dashboard that uses simulations to improve productivity while maintaining the quality of the manufactured parts.

Finally, Making Metaverse Happen invites us to experience the possibilities of web3 and the metaverse. Through the Movistar Immersive Experience app, available with Meta Quest glasses, we can visit the Movistar City that allows us to access a store, discover unpublished television content or navigate virtual worlds.

Accessing the Telefónica stand at the MWC is an invitation to delve into content, products and services based on the latest technology that will soon accompany us in our daily lives. With the Movistar Immersive Experience app, available with Meta Quest glasses, we can move through a virtual world that recreates a Movistar city with spaces to play and new Movistar Plus content.

There we will find a “movie room”, with content recorded in 180º and 360º from successful productions such as the series La Unidad or the program La Resistencia. There will also be sporting events, with the best moments of the Australia Open with Rafa Nadal in 2022 or exclusive highlights of the Copa del Rey basketball tournament, and later, musical shows, both live and recorded.

The digital store is a showroom space that serves to learn about the company's products and services, with the essential help of Aura, Telefónica's virtual assistant. In addition, you can visit

There's even more: Telefónica has developed two of its own virtual experiences in the Horizon Worlds immersive social environment, created by Meta. Telefónica Theme Park is an entertainment-focused world full of games and challenges, such as throwing darts to pop balloons and other tests of skill. Attendees will also be able to discover Telefónica World, another universe in which they will have the possibility of building a sculpture with different shapes based on the spheres of the company logo. There will be an area for speakers and another for users to post comments and obtain information.

Telefónica has opted to radically transform the business world, offering effective solutions that ensure that businesses are more competitive, efficient and sustainable. The demonstrations will allow us to verify the possibilities of digital twins in the production of industrial parts, the transformations of “smart agriculture” or the advantages of holographic telepresence in a 360º environment.
