The athletes from Uganda Geoffrey Kusuro and Doreen Chesang have been proclaimed champions, in the men's and women's categories, where the Spanish Marta Galimany was third. The Ugandan double closed the morning of athletics through the streets of Madrid, with the third and last test after the 10 and 21 kilometer race. Kusuro won the men's category with a time of 2:10:29 and Doreen Chesang did the same in the women's category (2:26:31).

In men, the victory was close until the last meters, equalized the first three until the Plaza de Cibeles. There, Kusuro imposed his law to arrive a couple of seconds before the Kenyans Sila Kiptoo (2:10:31) and Bernard Kimkemboi (2:10:32).

Meanwhile, Chesang found no rival at the Paseo de Recoletos finish line, several minutes ahead of the Ethiopian Fetale Tsegaye (2:32:18). Third, the national marathon record holder, Marta Galimany, the first Spanish classified and bronze medalist (2:37:47) crossed the finish line on a very hard day for the Catalan, who suffered stomach problems for much of the race. Shortly before, the first Spaniard of the Zurich Rock 'n' Roll Running Series Madrid marathon, Alberto Bueno González, had entered the finish line.
