Valencia asks to declare the Gay Games of "exceptional public interest" with Vox voting against

Vox does not like the idea of the Gay Games being held in Valencia. Good luck with the PP, which governs the Valencia City Council with them, that this initiative - which they promoted in their years at the head of the council - does seem commendable to the opposition - and this morning they have helped the PP to carry out a vote for request the Government of Spain to declare the Gay Games an exceptional public event and to provide the competition with public resources.

This Wednesday, the Finance Commission of the Valencia City Council has proposed, with the votes in favor of PP, Compromís and PSOE and the vote against Vox, to ask the Executive for the aforementioned declaration and to provide the general budgets of the State with the years 2024, 2025 and 2026 of a specific item for the promotion and development of the competition, municipal sources explained in a statement.

Likewise, they point out, the Finance Commission has agreed to request the support of Les Corts Valencianes and the Provincial Council of Valencia so that the event has national and international significance.

The council emphasizes that the Gay Games are one of the most important sporting and cultural competitions in the world. They have been held every four years since 1982 and bring together athletes and fans around principles such as diversity, participation, inclusion and personal improvement. The games are open to participation by anyone regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or religion.

Likewise, they add that the Gay Games will likely be held in June 2026 and will last 10 days. More than 37 sports and 20 cultural events are planned to be practiced throughout the neighborhoods and districts. Between 13,000 and 15,000 athletes and nearly 100,000 visitors are expected to arrive in the city. The estimated tourist impact will exceed 100 million euros.

The declaration of the competition as an event of exceptional public interest would encourage private collaboration since it would provide tax incentives to the Valencian companies that participated, hence the importance of the petition approved by the Treasury commission.
