Sergio Rico leaves the hospital

The Sevillian goalkeeper of Paris Saint-Germain, Sergio Rico, left yesterday Friday from the Virgen del Rocío hospital in Seville, after being admitted there since May 28 due to an accident with a horse in the pilgrimage of El Rocío (Huelva). Rico stated that he was confident in his recovery as an athlete to "be available soon and return to football".

Accompanied by his wife, Alba Silva, and received with applause by the people who were at the hospital, the athlete left the hospital shortly after 13 hours, on his own foot and visibly thinner and smiling. He showed gratitude to everyone who "lost a minute to send me a message."

Rico revealed that "despite the fact that he was not completely" under control of the aneurysm for which he had to undergo surgery three weeks ago, "it is necessary to maintain months of calm, tranquility and continue to recover at home", which he will do " following in the footsteps of the doctors, which is the most important thing".

"Thank you for the respect you have had towards my whole family, my wife especially, my club, Paris, Sevilla, colleagues and people who have found a minute of time to send me a message. Everything is appreciated and helps a lot", said Rico, who reminded all the hospital staff "that they are spectacular, great professionals, who have treated us as if we were at home despite being in a hospital".

Regarding the accident, he explained that "they say the brain is smart and erases these kinds of events", and that, for him, "it was a dream". "I woke up in the hospital and thank God I can leave today, excited, happy and thanking everyone."

Rico had a special mention for his wife, "who has spent twenty hours every day with me" as well as the Sevilla player Biris, and, when he was asked by Sevilla's need to sign a goalkeeper, he has trusted in his recovery as an athlete, to "be available soon, recover and return to football", and "hopefully I can return to Sevilla".

The Sevillian goalkeeper was hospitalized for 83 days, of which 37 he was under 24-hour surveillance in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), until he was transferred to the hospital on July 4 with medical attention and nursing care.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper, trained in Sevilla's youth team, in whose first team he was from 2014 to 2019, was called up on May 27 by the French team for the penultimate league game, which was played in Strasbourg , where PSG was proclaimed champion. After this match, he moved to the village of El Rocío, where he had the accident and was evacuated to the hospital after being stabilized by the emergency services that covered the pilgrimage.

During his hospitalization, he has experienced several ups and downs in his health and even had his sedation removed twice, until it was completely removed on June 7 and since then he has been conscious and treated by the intensive care team for the serious head injuries caused by the horse's kicks.
