The acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of the PNV Executive, Andoni Ortuzar, will stage today the agreement that launches the investiture. The pact will include progress in matters of self-government, especially with regard to full compliance with the Statute of Gernika, or in relation to Basque national recognition. Radio Euskadi has announced that it will also include important agreements on language policy or at the labor level.
The socialists had left the PNV until the end of the negotiations, which had been looking for “a good agreement” that would position it before its electorate in a pre-electoral context and with EH Bildu on its heels.
The Jeltzales have placed emphasis on three areas: self-government, including full compliance with the Statute of Gernika, 1979; “Basque national recognition”; and promotion of certain investments and infrastructures that are the responsibility of the State, especially around the arrival of high speed. In any case, negotiation sources also indicated this week that there would be "surprises" in other areas.
Radio Euskadi, which reported the news, mentioned that important agreements have been reached both in the socio-labor field and in that of language policy.
The negotiation, led by Aitor Esteban, has taken place in a climate of certain mistrust, the result of the failures of the last legislature: a good part of the 12 points of the previous investiture agreement were left unfulfilled.
This Thursday, however, there was optimism and sources familiar with the negotiation already indicated that it would be a matter of hours.
The Basque nationalists have finally chosen to present the agreement this Friday, one day after the socialists' pact with Junts was closed.
Andoni Ortuzar and Pedro Sánchez will stage the handshake around 11:00 a.m. in the Congress of Deputies.
