Nicolau de Monpezat, a free soul

Count Nicolau de Monpezat, great grandson of Queen Margaret of Denmark, has become one of the most admired members of European royalty since making a name for himself on the catwalks as a model. The son of Prince Joachim appears on the cover of the Dutch fashion magazine Numéro, in a very cool look, and has given an interview in the inside pages.

"My education has been full of happy moments and I have had a relatively 'normal' childhood. That said, I am aware of the special circumstances in which I was raised and the responsibility that comes with it. I think I've handled it very well", he says about how he deals with the fact of belonging to a royal family in daily life. And he adds: "I have always considered myself a free soul. One has to consider one's options more wisely, perhaps, but I have not felt restricted in living my life." In the interview there is no reference to the withdrawal of the title of prince that his grandmother made to him and his brothers from January 1st, which she justified so that they could lead a normal life, and now he is only the Count of Monpezat.

He will be 24 years old on August 28: "I love living life to the fullest" and he is convinced that "I can be the best version of myself and, if the path I walk is better than when I walked it for the first time, I consider myself satisfied." As for his main hobbies, he stays with sports such as padel and football, since "I love being active and taking care of my body".

From his beginnings as a model, he remembers being discovered by Scoop Models in Copenhagen. "I went to a meeting to discuss the possibilities of a career as a model and not much later I found myself on the catwalks in London and Paris," he explains.

About the designers he admires, he says: “Kim Jones has become a good friend of mine over the years and I have worked with him several times on his projects for Christian Dior. Pharrell Williams is another designer I admire for his work and his vision, also beyond fashion. I hope to work with him one day."

He combines his career as a model with his studies at the business school in Copenhagen, and next semester he will study at the University of Technology in Sydney, where he will go with Benedikte Thoustrup, his girlfriend of five years. "It's an adventure I'm looking forward to starting and I'm very excited to live abroad again. The choice fell on Australia because it is very exotic for a Dane like me. I've never been that far and I think that to see that corner of the world you need more than two weeks of vacation." Looking further into his future, about plans to perhaps pursue a more serious career in the fashion industry, the earl is cautious for now. "I haven't decided my future yet", he says enigmatically before adding that "I have a very open mind and I don't rule out working in fashion. I would like to try to work abroad and take advantage of my academic qualification, but at the moment I cannot be more specific”.
