Molins de Rei's main festival was celebrated normally and with participation in the events organized by the town's rich associative fabric until the last night was marred by acts of vandalism. In the morning from Saturday to Sunday, a large group of young people, many of them hooded, threw objects at the police and caused damage to several businesses in this town of Baix Llobregat. Burning waste containers were seen.
The events began shortly before four in the morning, near the concert area. There, objects were thrown at the local police and the Mossos d'Esquadra, who activated ARRO and Brimo. The rioters showed a violent attitude and caused damage in different places, burning urban furniture. In addition, they entered several businesses such as a vehicle dealership and a phone shop, among others.
The imprint of the calcined material and the broken window panes was visible yesterday. The Mossos made some identifications during the night and opened an investigation in order to clarify the facts. There were no arrests, Catalan police sources confirmed.
Through a statement, the City Council assured that these events "are not representative" of the major holiday. The Consistory emphasized that "the actions of the security forces are a given because objects have previously been thrown against them". "From the City Council we reject behavior like this, which destroys our party", he added. "Molins de Rei is not the only municipality that has been affected by this cause, which is why we demand preventive measures in order to implement and guarantee the safety of people and goods during the popular festivals", he pointed out.
After a meeting between the top municipal officials and the Urban Guard, the Consistory emphasized in its text that it could confirm that "no one was injured" related to these incidents despite the spectacular images that circulated like gunpowder among neighbors.
The mayor, Xavi Paz, said that according to the first information the protagonists of the incidents are young people "from outside the municipality".
