Felipe VI entrusts the investiture to the leader of the PSOE "for his willingness to be a candidate"

The King has entrusted the new attempt to form the Spanish Government to Pedro Sánchez, given "the willingness to be a candidate in a new investiture process of the representative of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party", according to the statement issued by the House of the King issued yesterday at midday.

In this way, Felipe VI resolves the appointment of Pedro Sánchez in this second attempt even though the socialist leader does not have, at least for the time being, the number of votes to be able to obtain a majority in the investiture. In fact, as of now, Sánchez is only guaranteed the votes of his own group.

On August 22, the King nominated as candidate the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, arguing that political tradition dictates that the party that obtained the most votes is designated as candidate for the investiture, and in his press release 'that day I remembered that the Popular Party had been the one that had obtained the most support at the polls.

However, Feijóo - as was confirmed last week in Congress - did not have the number of supports to obtain the presidency, which did not prevent Felipe VI from entrusting him with the attempt to form the government because, as to be able to verify in that first round of talks, there was not "a sufficient majority for the investiture" that prevented Feijóo from trying as head of the list of the party with the most votes.

Now Sánchez is facing a similar situation and with the same expectation – that he will eventually be able to have the necessary support – the King has entrusted him with the task of forming a government.

The decision was disciplinedly accepted by all parliamentary groups, which did not avoid the debate on social networks about the appropriateness of this decision.

The acting president of the Spanish Government must obtain the necessary votes in the coming weeks with the deadline of November 27. Once that date is reached, elections would be called automatically.
