The herons prepare to become independent

The first young royal herons born this spring at Les Masies de Voltregà, on the banks of the Ter river, in the Osona region, are about to leave.

In this series of photographs in La Vanguardia Readers' Photos we can see how the babies have already grown and are preparing to become independent.

Gray herons breed in colonies, usually in tall trees near water. In this area, specifically, they take advantage of the Ter River.

Nests start out as a small platform of sticks, but can end up being a huge mass of accumulated material.

You can see them in their natural habitat in the area of the Despujol meander in Les Masies de Voltregà, but the nest is on the other side of the Ter river which belongs to the municipality of Torelló.
