Feijóo qualifies his proposal to dissolve parties and admits that he has not been able to explain

The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has shown himself willing to modulate the proposal included in the amendment to the entire Amnesty law that proposes to dissolve unconstitutionally disloyal parties that, for example, may declare independence or call a referendum illegal.

The PP proposal was presented in public by the spokesperson in Congress, Miguel Tellado, last week and provoked the rejection of the majority of parties, except Vox, and many doubts among some constitutional experts.

Yesterday, Feijóo, in an interview on Onda Cero, suggested that the parties could be suspended and dissolution left for the most serious cases.

The president of the PP maintained that perhaps the party had not known how to explain the content of the proposal. “We probably took our explanation as obvious and there are things that cannot be taken as obvious,” said Feijóo to justify the lack of understanding of what the PP is proposing, which forced the spokesperson of the Popular Group in Congress, Miguel Tellado, to clarify the content of the amendment in a second press conference one day after presenting it for the first time.

The president of the PP recalled that his electoral program includes the classification in the Penal Code of the crime of “constitutional disloyalty”, and a “very good” group of jurists made the proposal, focusing on comparative law, for example in Germany.

Feijóo recalled that since 2012 there are 35 causes in the legal system for the dissolution of a party, from repeated embezzlement, incitement to hatred, collaboration with terrorism... and the PP believes that the call must be added to these causes of an illegal referendum and the declaration of independence, if that party "does not collaborate with justice later."

The president of the PP admitted that "it can be discussed whether to first suspend the party and only in very aggravated cases, propose dissolution", so if the proposal were admitted "we would be willing to see the amendments that are presented." because, he said, what the PP pursues is “to strengthen the State, because there is no longer any barrier to protect integrity.”

However, Feijóo does not understand that there are parties so concerned about the dissolution of a party if it unilaterally proclaims independence. “I understand that the independentists are worried, but I do not understand the concern of the PSOE”, if it is not going to declare the independence of a part of the territory.

For this reason, the president of the PP rejects that by classifying as a crime the call for an illegal referendum, which the PSOE proposed in 2019, the PP is accused of "persecuting the pro-independence parties." Feijóo recalls that the Constitution allows the existence of pro-independence parties, so they should not fear anything unless they commit a crime, for example the declaration of independence or the calling of an illegal referendum, since "they are not pursuing ideas, but crimes." .
