Botrán leaves the first political line after failing to achieve the CUP representation in Congress

Albert Botrán, the CUP candidate for Barcelona in the general elections last Sunday, has announced that he is leaving the front line of politics after failing to get representation in Congress. Botrán has said goodbye as a visible face of the party through a Twitter thread, where he has made self-criticism and has explained that he "passes into the background".

The CUP, which in the first general elections to which it was running in 2019, obtained two deputies, was left out of Congress on 23-J after losing practically two thirds of the voters compared to the last general ones.

Botrán already made self-criticism the same election night, and has insisted that "popular unity needs a refoundation." The CUP spokesman has criticized that the independence movement "lacks credibility and strategy" and added that there is "too much partisanship but at the same time too little debate." In the same thread, the deputy has affirmed that the CUP continues to be an "essential" political space for the country.

Through his personal Twitter account, Botrán has thanked CUP voters and his fellow party members and has shown "pride in having served my people." The representative of the CUP has assured that he will continue "the fight for the Catalan Republic wherever it is necessary".

Botrán was, in 2007, one of the founders of the party in Molins de Rey, where he ran for the municipal elections for the CUP in 2011 and was elected councilor.

In July 2015, he stood in the CUP primaries for the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia that same year, and his candidacy was supported with 67% of the votes. Thus, he ranked number five on the CUP list for Barcelona where he was elected deputy.

Since February 2018, he has been part of the leadership of the CUP, and in 2019 he managed to enter Congress as a deputy for the anti-capitalist party.
