Two police officers and a suspect have died in a shooting that occurred Sunday night in Salina, a city in Onondaga County in upstate New York, according to authorities.
It all started in the city of Syracuse. Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile said in a press conference that around 7:00 p.m. (23:00 GMT), two officers "tried to stop a suspicious vehicle at a checkpoint" that turned into the escape, indicates the CBS network.
The officers "lost sight of the vehicle" but were apparently able to "track it to an address in the nearby Liverpool neighborhood" thanks to the license plate.
According to Cecile, shortly after 8:00 p.m. (00:00 GMT Sunday), Syracuse officers and deputies from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office responded to the suspect vehicle and found a man armed, according to the US network.
The man opened fire on the officers and an exchange of gunfire ensued in which two police officers — one from the Syracuse force and the Onondaga Sheriff's deputy — and the suspect were wounded.
All three were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were all pronounced dead shortly after. It is unknown if anyone else was injured in the shooting and what caused it, CBS adds.
The Syracuse police chief said one of the officers who was killed had about three years of experience on the job.
