The deep storm Oscar will condition the weather this week in a good part of Spain because it will bring a lot of rain and strong wind to the Canary Islands from Tuesday and to large areas of the peninsula -except in the Mediterranean- from Wednesday.
Oscar was named this Sunday by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Since the Spanish, French and Portuguese meteorological services began naming high-impact storms in southwestern Europe during the 2017-2018 season, Oscar is the second latest behind only Miguel, who was designated on June 5. of 2019.
“This 2022-2023 season is the most active in terms of appointments, along with the 2019-2020 season. Both tie, for the moment, at 15 named storms”, according to Rubén del Campo, Aemet spokesman.
Oscar will give rise to an episode of abundant rains and intense winds in the Canary Islands, especially this Tuesday and this Wednesday. As of Wednesday, it will be felt in the peninsula with widespread rains in the western half and the center, while they will not reach the Mediterranean.
As for temperatures, they rise this Monday and Tuesday, and will drop clearly on Wednesday, to recover again on Thursday. "In general, it will be a warmer week than the previous ones, still a little cooler than normal in the central and southern half, but already exceeding 25 degrees in many points and even 30 or 32 degrees in points in the south and east of the peninsula”, summarized Del Campo.
The Aemet prediction, collected by Servimedia, indicates that the hottest capitals could be Seville this Monday (32 degrees), Seville on Tuesday (34), Bilbao on Wednesday (30), Bilbao and Zaragoza on Thursday (32), Zaragoza on Friday (33), Murcia and Zaragoza on Saturday (34), and Zaragoza on Sunday (35).
The effects of Oscar will be more noticeable this Tuesday in the Canary Islands, with heavy or very heavy rains, especially in the west and south of the western islands. In Fuerteventura and Lanzarote it will not rain with such intensity. In addition, the wind will blow very strongly and may exceed 90 km/h in Tenerife and La Palma.
On the peninsula, however, a calm day is expected without as many storms as in the previous days, although they may be locally strong in mountainous areas and their proximities in the northern half and eastern third.
The temperatures will be higher than in previous days. Thermometers will mark more than 25 degrees in large areas of the country and more than 30 in the Ebro, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys, even in the latter it could exceed 32 degrees.
The Oscar storm will continue generating rains this Wednesday in the Canary Islands, once again more abundant in the mountainous islands, where they may be locally strong and even persistent, and they will be weaker in the eastern islands. Southwest winds will continue to blow strongly in the archipelago, especially in high areas.
The influence of Oscar and its associated fronts will already be noticeable on the peninsula, which will leave rain in large areas, especially in the western half, the center and Andalusia. It will rain more intensely and persistently in Galicia and the south of the Andalusian region. And less rainfall is expected in Aragon and Catalonia, mainly. Nor will it rain in the Balearic Islands.
Temperatures will drop in almost the entire country, a drop that in some areas of the west and south of the peninsula will be six to eight degrees compared to the previous day. Even so, there will be a warm atmosphere in the Cantabrian Sea, with 30 degrees in Bilbao. Seville will reach 29 degrees, Zaragoza or Oviedo will be around 27 or 28 degrees, while Madrid and Salamanca will stay at only 20 degrees.
This Thursday there will be occasional rains on the most prominent islands of the Canary Islands, but the effects of the Oscar storm will clearly subside, as it will move away from the archipelago. In addition, the winds will also calm down on the islands.
On the peninsula, however, the rainfall associated with the Oscar storm will continue, which will affect many areas. The lower and middle Ebro, the Mediterranean coast of Levante and the Balearic Islands will be left out a bit. Temperatures will clearly recover in most of the country.
As of Friday, the probability of precipitation will be limited to the north and east of the peninsula, while temperatures will hardly vary, if at all with increases in the eastern third of the peninsula.
The thermometers will reflect 30 or 32 degrees in the interior of the Mediterranean communities, as in the Ebro and Guadalquivir valleys.
