The King of Cachopo acknowledges in a letter, for the first time, that he killed Heidi Paz

César Román, known as the King of Cachopo, has acknowledged for the first time, in a letter sent to the Provincial Court of Madrid, that he killed Heidi Paz in 2018, for whose murder he was convicted, and assures that he regrets it and asks for forgiveness.

However, his lawyer, Ana Isabel Peña, has told EFE that this letter is from March and that it was a "moment of desperation" in which Román confessed to being the author although he is not, and in fact they are going to appeal the conviction before European authorities.

As announced this Monday by the Telecinco program 'Vamos a ver' and confirmed by the lawyer, the King of Cachopo sent a handwritten letter to the Provincial Court in which he acknowledges being the author of the crime for the first time, since he had always denied that he killed Heidi Paz, both at trial and when he appealed the sentence that sentenced him to 15 years in prison for the homicide.

"I inform the Provincial Court of Madrid of my recognition of the crime committed, my regret and in which I ask for forgiveness from the victim's family," the text details.

"After making a deep and intimate reflection, I come to express my recognition of the crime committed and for which I was convicted, wanting to make clear my total and sincere regret for it," he adds.

He states that, if Heidi Paz's family considers it so, he would be willing to make "a statement before the judge and before these relatives so that they can rest once and for all what happened," and that he wants to "bring the case to an end." process" and not appeal the sentence imposed before international judicial bodies.

Lawyer Ana Isabel Peña has told EFE that Román wrote that letter at a time when she was sick and due to "the desperation" of having been in prison for five years and without permits, and that once they spoke, "of mutual agreement", both decided to continue appealing to European bodies because he is not guilty.

In 2021, the Provincial Court of Madrid sentenced the King of Cachopo to 15 years in prison for the murder of Heidi Paz and for dismembering the body, with the concurrence of the aggravating circumstances of kinship and gender. He also sentenced him to 15 years of subsequent supervised release, and to pay compensation to Heidi's children of 142,229 euros each and to her mother of 100,000.

The convicted person appealed but the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid confirmed the sentence in 2022, as did the Supreme Court later.
