The Generalitat files charges against eight chemical companies in Tarragona for contaminating with microplastics

The Department of Climate Action of the Generalitat has opened a file for non-compliance with the Environmental Responsibility law against eight chemical companies in Camp de Tarragona for their alleged responsibility in the origin of pollution with plastic pellets, small particles of this material. .

The companies investigated, according to the digital Porta Enrere and confirmed by ACN from sources from the Generalitat, are the multinationals Repsol Química and Dow Chemical, as well as Basell Poliolefinas, SK Primacor, Transformadora de Etileno, Katoen Natie, Schmidt Ibérica and Ravago Plastics.

The file has been opened as a result of the environmental liability procedure before the Generalitat presented by Good Karma and Surfrider Foundation in October to investigate the origin of this contamination.

According to Acció Climàtica sources, it is in its initial phase and will mark the beginning of investigations to determine whether the activity of these companies is responsible for the discharge into the environment of pellets, small plastic balls used in the manufacture of bottles, among others. others, and one of the micro plastics that most pollute the sea.

The reported entities, Good Karma and Surfrider Foundation, have been studying their presence on the Tarragona coast since 2018. As detailed in October, in recent years two world records for collecting pellets in this area had been broken: more than 700,000 in 2021 and more than two million in 2022.

On the other hand, administrations, such as the Generalitat itself, and chemical companies producing plastics built the Zero Pèl·lets platform in September to raise awareness among societies that are part of the plastic value chain of the environmental impact of the loss of these micro plastics and propose new measures that help limit these impacts.
