It turns out that you have no idea what the topic is, but you have a savior, an application with artificial intelligence that just by taking a photo of the exercises it solves them for you.
Although it may sound like an invention by Doraemon to get the always lazy Nobita out of trouble, it is a very real resource for millions of students around the world. The application is called Photomath and it has been a hit among young people with more than 100 million downloads worldwide.
Both this app and ChatGPT are some examples of how artificial intelligence can be used by students to save a lot of effort in their work and homework during the course, something that only arrived a year ago and is already fully implemented.
82% of students between 14 and 17 years old have ever used AI for academic purposes, according to the latest study by Empantallados.com and GAD3, a fact that may surprise but without a doubt everything indicates that it will grow in the future.
However, what about the other side? Because just as we have talked about the case of a student who uses an application for his mathematics homework, it turns out that many teachers are also using AI to create exercises, exams and classes thanks to the contribution of this technology.
It can reach the ironic point that a teacher proposes some exercises done with AI and it is the artificial intelligence itself used by the student that responds, leaving the interaction between student and teacher in a conversation between machines.
When used effectively, AI brings with it a number of significant advantages such as its ability to provide educators with personalization options in the learning process through adaptive tutoring systems and the automation of administrative tasks to have more time to prepare the classes and teach students.
This is how Pablo Haya, director of Social Business Analytics at the Institute of Knowledge Engineering (IIC), defends it: “We are facing a technology with enormous potential in the educational sector. There is no single way to teach. AI is a tool at the teacher's disposal, not an imposition,” recalls the specialist.
Practical examples of how teachers use AI for their classes are varied. For example, some use Classpoint AI to generate questionnaires from the content they teach in class. They can also use the SlidesAI.io platform, which by introducing traditional gray and voluminous text can lead to a much more interesting slide for students.
Somewhat more controversial is the Gradescope application, which allows teachers to apply a grade and even comments for all the subjects and levels in the database, thus correcting much faster. It has reached the point that AI is even used to detect possible plagiarism from other students to another artificial intelligence, such as with the Quillbot tool.
But not all teachers share this vision where AI is fully accepted. For example, David Gutiérrez, professor of the software engineering degree at the University of Seville, explains the experience they had at the center with ChatGPT: “We had to ban it. Yes, it is detected that he uses a different language due to his characteristic way of expressing himself, but it cannot be proven that this response is from ChatGPT,” he comments.
In any case, it will be a debate that from today and for the next few years will require specialists with training in artificial intelligence, ethics and education to continue advancing without technological chaos.
