Carnival 2024: when is it, dates and in which communities will it be a holiday?

Countdown to the celebration of Carnival 2024, one of the most anticipated events of the year, which will fill the corners of all of Spain with life, smiles and color. Beyond the clothing, there will also be no shortage of troupes, murgas, choirs, romanceros and chirigotas, which will bring out the funniest side of any issue.

Not all communities give the same importance to this celebration. Especially relevant is the Cádiz carnival, one of the most popular nationwide. Not far behind is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is distinguished by its imagination, fantasy and eye-catching costumes. Nor should we lose track of the one held in Águilas (Murcia).

Being subject to the lunar calendar, this festival changes its date every year. It is celebrated forty days before Holy Thursday, which in 2024 will be celebrated on March 28. Following these dates, Carnival 2024 will be held from Thursday, February 8 to Wednesday, February 14.

At the beginning of the year, our country establishes eight national holidays, but none of them correspond to carnival dates. In this case, the autonomous communities are in charge of setting the holiday, in which case it is of interest. It can also be determined by local administrations, which reserve a certain date.

In Cádiz, it will be a local holiday on February 12, although there will be celebrations and activities throughout the week. In the case of Tenerife, February 13 has been established as a holiday. Same day chosen for the city of Águilas.

In Galicia, where eight carnivals have the official classification of Festival of Tourist Interest, February 13 will be a local holiday. That day will also be a regional holiday in Extremadura, where it also has great roots and tradition.
