Vermuts Miró launches research into low-sugar vermouths

Vermouths Miró, the main vermouth producing company in Spain, has announced its ambitious "Low Suggar" project with the aim of developing low-sugar vermouths and establishing a pioneering category in the sector.

This innovative project will receive solid financial support of 400,000 euros from the Spanish government through the ECOFOOD 2023 tractor project of PERTE Agri-food (Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation).

Last December, the Ministry of Industry revealed the final list of the thirteen tractor projects approved within the framework of the PERTE Agri-Food call, highlighting the ECOFOOD project with the largest number of participating companies and a significant budget allocation. ECOFOOD, which has the collaboration of 70 companies, focuses on key areas such as digitalization, ecological transition and sustainability in various agri-food subsectors.

Within this macroproject is the Vermouth Miró proposal, called "Low Suggar," which aims to investigate the replacement of sugars in vermouth with organic and minimally processed components. This innovative approach seeks to reduce the sugar content in the popular Reusan drink. The total budget of the project amounts to 534,000 euros, with generous public support of 403,000 euros, including 349,000 euros in non-refundable funds and 54,000 euros in public financing.

Vermouths Miró will partner with the Eurecat Technology Center to carry out this pioneering research, hoping to contribute to the development of a new category of vermouths suitable for vegans, celiacs and people prone to diabetes. This initiative, which challenges the traditional recipe for European vermouth with more than 5,000 years of history, reflects Miró's clear commitment to innovation and cutting-edge products.

Substantial growth

It should be noted that Vermuts Miró, since its acquisition in 2019 by the Reus food industrial group Masergrup, has experienced substantial growth, doubling its turnover from 5 million to 10 million euros in three years. The consolidation of research and development, together with the launch of new products such as Miró Reserva Organic vermouth and Gran Reserva de Oporto, has allowed the internationalization of the company, which currently represents 4% of total sales.

Masergrup plans to invest a total of 2.1 million euros and will receive 1.4 million euros in innovation aid thanks to the participation of another company in the group, Global Fruselva, in the sister project FOODECO and the ALIMTECH project.

This financial backing will further strengthen Vermuts Miró's position as a leader in the vermouth industry and promises a revolution in the world of beverages with its “Low Suggar” project.

While they work on this innovative project, remember that you can purchase the most emblematic Vermuts Miró products in the Gourmet La Vanguardia online store.
