Price is not the only factor that pushes people to prefer one supermarket over another. So are other issues such as proximity, accessibility to facilities, promotions and discounts or the variety of products. In order to know the preferences of Spanish consumers, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has consulted 4,000 members about their favorite chains and what services they value most.

After carrying out this survey, the organization has observed that what customers value most is the quality of products and food, and having a good range, in addition to having a good price level. They have also concluded that the supermarkets that arouse the most satisfaction among consumers are, in this order, Esclat (with 84 points out of 100), Costco (81 points) and Bon Preu (80 points).

While the regional chains Esclat and Bon Preu lead the ranking of the most appreciated supermarkets, Costco, an American multinational present in Madrid, Seville and Sestao (Vizcaya) comes in second place and achieves the highest score on the list in satisfaction with the products by part of their clients.

El Corte Inglés and Hipercor are the supermarkets with national implementation with the best marks, but the cost of their products takes away points from them, the organization says. Spar and Condis, on the other hand, are the least valued by those surveyed.

By type of food, to buy meat, consumers prefer Costco, Hipercor or Esclat, among others; Costco, Esclat and El Corte Inglés for fish; In fruit and vegetables, Costco, Plusfresc and Esclat stand out; The best valued white brands are those of Costco, Esclat and Bonárea; and the best ECO or Bio products are found in Hipercor, Aldi and Esclat, according to the survey.

The entity also indicates that, although online purchases have become established in other areas, there are still few who fill their shopping carts through the web. A minority and sporadic habit, he indicates, even among the youngest. But, for those who do choose to shop online, the best-rated online supermarket is Mercadona, followed by El Corte Inglés and Dia, while Alcampo is the least liked by online shoppers.

Likewise, the OCU states that the average monthly expenditure in the supermarket in 2023 was 392 euros, a figure that exceeds that of the previous year (369 euros). However, he points out that this amount does not reflect household spending on food, since purchases from other establishments would have to be added to the figure.
