The iconic Yelmo Icaria cinemas, benchmarks for the offer in original version (V.O.) in Barcelona, turn off the projectors after 27 years of films. The rooms of the El Center de la Vila shopping center, in Vila Olímpica, will close on Thursday, July 27, as reported by the chain that owns it.
"The contract is coming to an end, and with it, we find ourselves in the need to communicate the cessation of our operations in this emblematic cinema," Cine Yelmo reported in a statement collected by Europa Press.
Throughout these years, 5,000 film premieres and 12 million viewers have passed through its theaters. The company has assured that it will work to program "new cinematographic proposals and keep the passion for the seventh art alive.
The closure had been advanced by Jaume Ripoll, co-founder and editorial director of Filmin. "The Icaria Yelmo closes, a cinema that was fundamental for many of us who studied cinema in the early 2000s. I think it is the cinema I have gone to the most. Its morning shows, its double or triple sessions. How sorry I am," Ripoll lamented
One of those who has reacted to Ripoll's message on the networks has been the actor and director Santiago Segura: "What a downer. When I lived in Barcelona it was my favorite cinema, also on V.O. What great movie evenings enjoyed there. Luckily I still have the Phenomena". The company, with rooms throughout Spain, has not yet made a statement.
