The harrowing rescue of a neighbor to save a girl and her dog from dying in a fire

Pets can be a source of life, inspiration and strength that pushes us forward. On most occasions we are unable to see them for whatever reasons: busy with other tasks, lack of attention, stress and psychological discomfort... but they are always there, by our side, ready to help us in whatever is necessary. That is why we must be grateful for their presence, take care of them and defend them to the most unexpected limits.

An action along these lines has occurred this week in Kennedy, a town belonging to the capital district of Bogotá, in Colombia. During the fire in an apartment block, a neighbor managed to rescue a girl and her dog, who had been trapped in the window right above them. The man has climbed up to the gap in the glass and grabbed first the pet and then the minor, putting them in his own apartment.

The rescuer, who responds to the name of Jeffrey Cruz, was able to give pertinent explanations afterwards, in an interview for Noticias Caracol. His teleworking position allowed her to hear screams above his head, signaling that something was wrong. At the time he stuck his head out the window and he found the girl, alone at home, who had been trapped on the balcony after a fire broke out in her home.

“It was around 3:00 p.m. and I was teleworking, I work at the Ministry of Finance, and I started to hear screams and noises, I looked out and saw that the apartment upstairs was on fire, I heard screams. At that moment you think about what to do and how to react. The first thing is to stay calm, I heard that there was a girl upstairs, in one of the rooms, I looked out and she was in the window,” Cruz explained to Caracol.

According to him, another neighbor on the block helped him put the two affected girls to safety. "Between the two of us we kind of said 'well, look out and I'll have it.' He looked out the window, I hugged him, I grabbed him, I had him with all my strength and he was able to reach the girl. There was a little dog, so the little dog passes by. The girl got off the hook, I grabbed her by one leg, he by the other and we were able to get her in and fortunately we were able to save her,” were her words.

Cruz also explained that the Bogotá fire department took about 10 minutes to arrive after giving the warning, but at the end of the day the good news is that there were no accidents. “What had to be done was done, we made the decisions that at that time we considered the best and today the story ended in a good way,” he commented.
