Montrubí, the winery that promoted the resurgence of Sumoll

Montrubí is a family winery where organically grown high-altitude wines are produced in an idyllic setting: a valley in the Alt Penedès, 60 km from Barcelona, where vineyards coexist with pine and olive forests on its estate of more than 300 hectares. .

The careful production of Montrubí wines begins with an exhaustive selection of the best grapes from his estate of more than 300 hectares, located at altitudes ranging between 500 and 800 meters and planted mainly with autochthonous varieties such as Garnacha Negra, the cariñena, the xarel·lo, the parellada and, especially, the sumoll.

Montrubí has been one of the main supporters of sumoll (also known as the Pinot Noir of the Mediterranean), a traditional variety in the Penedès but which had almost reached extinction with the arrival in the 70s of the varieties called "improvers" from from France especially and the abandonment of much of the vineyard.

Led by the winemaker Josep Queralt -the soul of the winery and a lover of these places who grew up next to the winery- in Montrubí they became pioneers in the production of red wines with sumoll. The success of one of his proposals, Gaintus (100% sumoll), has contributed decisively to the revival of this variety.

In the town of Avellà, where Montrubí is located, is the winery, the Boutique Winery Hotel Casa Gran 1771 and the chalet, an architectural work from the end of the 19th century that has been completely restored, with different exterior and interior spaces, prepared for the celebration of events. The winery has its own gastronomic space, with a wine-bar and restaurant, where wine and gastronomic experiences are offered.

Durona, a very Mediterranean wine

Durona is the only coupage wine produced in Montrubí. Josep Queralt tests the mixture of 3 very Mediterranean varieties: 50% Sumoll, 25% Garnacha, 25% Cariñena. That Sumoll, which is the hallmark of this house, adds all the peculiarity to a wine. Fresh, cheerful, with body and a long finish.

It is a red wine with an intense garnet color with aromas of red, wild fruits, warm spices and a slight mineral nuance. On the palate it is complex with the fruity characteristics of a Mediterranean red that reveals a good balance between red fruit and oak. Ideal for grilled red meats, stews, roasts. Game meat, duck breast, cured cheeses and ratatouille from Manchego.
