A cyclist risks his life jumping traffic lights in New York to save a dog on the run

The only persecutions that we are used to seeing in New York are the police, at least it is the scene that is repeated in hundreds of movies and television series. It is unusual or not at all common to travel half a city to save the life of a dog, who was on the run and was at risk of being hit by one of the hundreds of vehicles on the road.

"I saw that a small dog was running non-stop through the streets," explains Rick Bernstein, in statements collected by The Dodo. This man became an unlikely hero, doing everything in his power to save the animal's life.

He did not stop alerting all passersby: "Get the dog!" The first problem is when the dog passed one of the traffic lights and ran into a bus. Luckily, there was nothing to regret. Several people rushed in to help the man, but they couldn't catch him. "He showed incredible agility," he continues.

The persecution became even more complicated. The dog turned right onto a street and met a car head-on. Luckily, the animal dodged it, saving his life once more. "Don't go on the road!" Bernstein and his wife yelled at him, joining the rescue.

This man believes that the dog was not paying attention to him because he was very nervous and scared. And his worst fears were confirmed. The dog entered a road packed with cars. "He ran two or three miles at least," he says.

Against all odds, the dog stopped his escape. He took refuge in the corner of a nearby street. Bernstein and his wife were able to get off their bikes and calm the animal down. "I like to help others. I don't care if it's a person or a dog. That's me," this man ends.
