Racism, ban Adidas and expired medicines: Kanye West's school, in the spotlight

A new controversy surrounds rapper Kanye West, now called Ye. Cecilia Hailey and Chekarey Byers, two African-American former teachers at Donda Academy, the Christian school founded by the singer, have sued the center for racial discrimination and claim they were fired without reason. The expulsion occurred after both teachers complained to the management that the center, located in Simi Vallery (California), failed to comply with state regulations on health, education and safety. This is how several American media collect it.

The center opened in September, at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year. Both teachers were fired in March, and have highlighted certain health and safety violations at the institution. Cecilia and Chekarey say they were the only African-American teachers at the school. According to the lawsuit, filed against the interpreter of No Child Left Behind himself, the school and three of its directors, the teachers had salaries considerably lower than what they had agreed to when they were hired. Something that brings to the fore the racism they would have suffered in their employment.

The truth is that little is known about the operation of the school, since there is very little information due to the confidentiality agreements that parents are obliged to sign when enrolling their children, as Rolling Stone magazine points out. The two teachers affirm that Donda Academy harbors serious problems of bullying and physical aggression among students and towards teachers due to the lack of protocols. But this is not all.

As these professionals now reveal, the institution does not have cleaning, concierge, or nursing services, in addition to storing expired medications. The only food allowed in the school is sushi, they say, and they also reveal that the students ate from trays, sitting on the floor. On the other hand, they ensure that coloring sheets and crossword puzzles are prohibited.

According to the two former workers at the center, the classrooms do not have chairs, and students are forced to sit on cushions on the floor, while teachers stand or sit on stools. In addition, they also reveal that there is a dress code: students must wear black and are prohibited from wearing Nike and Adidas clothing. It should be remembered that this last brand broke his collaboration with the rapper after his anti-Semitic and racist comments, a topic that was most controversial last year.

The truth is that the controversy has surrounded Kanye West in recent months. First, after his breakup with his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, whom he launched a large number of attacks after his relationship with comedian Pete Davidson became official. Then came his controversial anti-Semitic and racist statements. This led Twitter to close the singer's account on the platform, in order to prevent further damage and hate posts. Now the Stronger interpreter is back in the media spotlight.
