Penélope Cruz reveals which character obsessed her after playing him: "I had a fantasy in my head when the series ended"

Penélope Cruz is one of the most recognized actresses in the history of Spanish cinema. The Alcobendas native was the first actress from our country to be nominated and subsequently win the Oscar, thanks to her roles in Volver and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Since then she has continued working tirelessly until today, when this Friday Ferrari is released, the review of the life of Enzo Ferrari where she plays his wife Laura.

In order to present the film to her audience, Cruz has been the first guest of the week at El Hormiguero with Pablo Motos. There, the actress was able to talk at length about director Michael Mann's attention to detail, the harshness of the scenes she had to share with Alan Driver and his self-demand when it came to getting in front of the cameras. However, one of the most interesting details of the conversation was about another project, prior to Ferrari.

In 2018, Penelope was one of the cast members of American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. The Madrid actress played the role of Donatella Versace, model and director of the Italian brand that bears her last name. This was founded by her brother Giovanni Maria, better known as Gianni, until he was murdered in 2017 at the hands of the American Andrew Cunanan. A short format, which lasted 9 episodes.

Despite this, Cruz felt that he had become obsessed with the character during his characterization, and he had the feeling that things would go much further. “When you have a lot of material, as was the case with Donatella, I became obsessed to such levels that when we finished filming the series, in my head I had created this fantasy that it was not over, that it was not going to be a limited series of 10 chapters,” he said.

“At some point we would go on and on telling Donatella's story. And I still have it there, like a fantasy, because I spent so much time living with her energy and so immersed in her story, in her story with her brother... I became very obsessed. That's what can happen to you when you're filming a series for a long time,” Cruz expanded. An obsession that also carries over to filming due to his desire to make the scenes perfect.

“I never think I nailed it. Then I punish myself a lot, even on the days when I am happy, something is always missing. I can't help but take out the whip, it was Javier who helped me a lot. I give myself a lot of effort,” the actress confessed, feeling that her partner Javier Bardem allowed her to be less demanding and try to see things from a less aggressive perspective.
