HBO rules out producing 'Game of Thrones' sequel about Jon Snow

Kit Harington sat down with HBO directors in 2022 with a proposal: produce a sequel to Game of Thrones focused on Jon Snow, a character he was willing to play again. It was going to be the vehicle for him to show off and a way to explore what had happened in Westeros after the conclusion of the series, taking into account that so far only prequels are in production or development. But, as the actor has revealed, the project is not moving forward.

“It's not on the table,” he said during an interview with ScreenRant. The reasons would be creative: the creative team that he and HBO assembled “could not find the right story to tell” and, instead of continuing with the project in development, it has been discarded after the secrecy surrounding which scriptwriters had been hired for shuffling ideas and what kind of plot the spin-off focused on Jon Snow could take.

He, for the record, does not rule out resuming the initiative in the future: “We have decided to leave the tools behind for the moment. In the future we may want to return to it but, for the moment, no.” Actor Liam Cunningham, who played Ser Davos, had even contacted Harington to express that he also wanted to return to the fantastic universe of G.R.R. Martin to count on him for the new story.

It is also possible that it was not a priority for HBO either despite how popular Harington's character was in Game of Thrones taking into account the series that are underway.

The House of the Dragon premieres the second season in June, with the aim of possibly continuing with a third for 2026. It was precisely announced last week that The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Errant Knight is about to begin filming after signing Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell in the lead roles.

And, among other projects in development, he has an animated series titled Nine Voyages about Corlys Velaryon's naval past.
