If a few days ago the gospel world was mourning the loss of Brazilian singer Pedro Henrique, who died abruptly during a performance at Feira de Santana, it is now mourning the death of Zimbabwean Eric Moyo, who was only 41 years old.
Henrique did not survive off stage, but in Moyo's case, he became dizzy in the middle of a concert in South Africa and was immediately taken to Port Elizabeth hospital. The singer was hospitalized, recovering from a "brain hemorrhage," but according to sources close to Moyo, when he already seemed much better, he suddenly died.
Eric Moyo won the African version of the television competition Idol in 2007 and was part of the group Joyous Celebration. His victory on the show earned him an $80,000 prize and a recording contract with Sony BMG.
According to information provided by local media, Moyo felt dizzy during the performance and dropped his microphone. One of the sources who spoke to media outlet ZiMoja alleged that he "was then taken aside, where he complained of headaches and went to the emergency room." Another source said that they were "taken by surprise" to learn of his death, since he was "recovered" when his heart stopped beating.
In a statement announcing his death, his group said: "His passing has left a deep void at Joyous Celebration, but his legacy will live on through his music, which touched the hearts of many and made a significant contribution to the genre of gospel music. "
Born in 1982, the singer was discovered by Lindelani Mkhize in 2014 and soon became a sensation in East Africa. He was known for his stage presence, his unique songs and his quirky fashion sense.
