The couple has also taken the opportunity to make a plea, directed at other victims of rape. "You have to hold your head high. You don't have to be ashamed of anything. These are the criminals who have to feel this way," they add.

Fernanda was gang-raped, while her husband was beaten and threatened, when the couple was camping in a remote area in the northeast of India, a crime that has provoked outrage and discussions and accusations among the country's politicians.

The couple, who had been traveling for several months to tour the country from the extreme south, had set up a tent to spend the night near a police station in the Dumka district, in the state of Jharkhand, more than 1,300 kilometers from New Delhi, when around midnight a group of men attacked them, as confirmed to Efe by several official sources.

After reporting what happened, the Indian Police have announced the arrest of all the suspects involved in the rape of the Spanish tourist. Those involved face harsh penalties. According to the country's penal code, it must be punished with no less than ten years in prison, and a gang rape with up to life in prison.
