The last edition of Eurovision brought with it a series of historical brands that will be hard to see again in a long time. To begin with, it was the first edition held outside the winning country since 1980, a fact that has only happened eight times. It also served to equalize the all-time record for all-time winners, with Sweden equaling Ireland on seven wins. And in the same way, it meant the consecration of Loreen as the second double champion of the contest after the Irishman Jonny Logan.
The historic victory of "Tattoo" in Liverpool will bring the contest back to Sweden in 2024, this being the third time it has happened in the last ten years. For this reason, the team in charge of this new installment of the festival, directed by the public channel SVT, has already confirmed the venue and dates for next year. The 68th edition of Eurovision will be held on May 7, 9 and 11, 2024 in the city of Malmö, in the southwest of the country.
It will also be the third time that Malmö is in charge of organizing the event, after the 1992 and 2013 editions, the latter being also preceded by a victory for Loreen. The place chosen, as on the previous occasion, the Malmö Arena, a venue mainly for ice hockey with a capacity of 15,500 spectators for concerts. A selection that has been preceded by some intrigue.
And it is that the final decision to have Malmö as the venue has been a surprise given the different options put on the table. The final phase to designate the winner was also played by Gothenburg, Örnsköldsvik and Stockholm, in a complicated process due to the lack of spaces. The Swedish capital even went so far as to propose the construction of a temporary pavilion given the impossibility of using other venues such as the Tele2 Arena, the Globen Arena or even the Friends Arena, a 50,000-seat stadium located in Solna.
With this election, Malmö ties with Stockholm in Eurovision festivals held. The capital was in charge of managing the chores of the contest three times: in 1975, 2000 and 2016. This last one is perhaps the most remembered edition, being preceded by the triumph of Måns Zelmerlöw and his success “Heroes”, his duo in charge of the galas with Petra Mede and the introduction of the public televote, a system that has drastically changed the results in the most recent editions.
