The murder of the Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta continues to be a topical issue on the front pages, gatherings and virtual portals. Spanish cook Daniel Sancho remains under arrest in a Thai prison after confessing to dismembering the victim. Both families and the police forces have moved their cards ahead of the trial that should be held before the end of the year, and for which the defendant faces a death sentence.
This week new details of the relationship between the doctor and chef have emerged, through a common acquaintance. Samira, a friend of Arrieta, has commented on how she met Sancho on the YouTube channel TriunArts, dedicated to the world of true crime. The person involved has spoken of a video call that she shared with the detainee at a dinner with the murder victim. The two had a cordial conversation over the surgeon's phone.
“It was very typical for Edwin to post things on Instagram. He liked to show his life, his trips, his dinners, his meals... Coincidentally, he uploads this image and she, while watching TV in Colombia, answers him by saying what a handsome boy, "commented Samira. According to her words, they were both having dinner together when Arrieta decided to activate the video call and contact her. They both appeared on the screen, before engaging in a brief exchange.
In Samira's words, neither she nor Edwin Arrieta's family knew Daniel Sancho on a personal level before that conversation. The victim's acquaintance recounted, with surprise, that she did not expect that this man would end up being his murderer: “It does not occur to you that he is going to do this. This does not mean that I knew him, but that it was a casual anecdote. In the same way, they briefly commented on the work that they both carried out around the stove.
The Colombian surgeon commented that her friend prepared food at home in her Colombia, something that interested Sancho due to his experience in the kitchen. They both commented on her fondness for cooking and the defendant invited her to try her recipes in the future. "When you come to Spain one day, I'll cook for you," she told him before the call ended. It was the only time Samira and Daniel Sancho had contact before the murder.
While these details continue to trickle down, the detainee's family continues to make moves to maintain contact. Rodolfo Sancho, Daniel's father, will visit Thailand this week, according to Carmen Balfagón, lawyer and spokesperson for the family. "We don't know when it will be, we are pending a matter that will be closed on Monday and from Monday I will know the day that he is going to go to Koh Samui because he has to go through Bangkok first."
