What are bicycle cleats and when should they be used?

Surely we all know some excited cyclist. A person who is delighted with his bicycle, and who only explains wonders about everything he can do. From his routes, from his weekends, from his achievements...

Surely, this person has different pedals, with a design that we do not know. These are automatic pedals. Below we explain what they are and when you should use them.

Clipless pedals serve to anchor your feet to the pedals. This is achieved thanks to the cleats, pieces that are installed under the sole of the shoes and that act as a joint between the foot and the bicycle.

Once installed, just apply pressure on the pedals. After finding the exact point, a slight “click” lets us know that the foot is now secured.

To release the foot, the heel must be pushed outwards. This movement, especially at the beginning, requires a certain degree of concentration. Otherwise, when we lose speed, we will not have any point of support with the ground, and we will end up falling.

Cleats allow us to transmit the force of our legs much more effectively. Normally, the impulse occurs in a downward direction, but with cleats, we can also push the leg upwards.

On the other hand, they also give much more control over the bike. If there is a small obstacle, just literally jump on the pedals, the bike will also rise with us.

First of all, urban environments are not ideal for wearing cleats. The large number of obstacles and unforeseen events that arise along the route make it safer to have your feet completely free.

Occasional cyclists tend to feel uncomfortable with this component. Recurrence supposes an involuntary automation of the “calar” and “descalar” technique. When getting on the bike punctually, it is difficult to get used to the movement, and this simple gesture becomes a constant concern.

The coves are also not suitable for boys and girls. Cycling shoes are not designed for walking, much less running or playing, which they usually do all the time.

Pedaling with cleats requires a small investment. Both the shoes and the pedals are special, and the cleats must be changed as they wear out.

Likewise, as there is little freedom of movement, the cleat must be well positioned. In case of discomfort, a biomechanical study may be necessary.

The cleats and automatic pedals are designed for regular cyclists who move mainly in areas far from urban traffic. At first, it may take a little adjustment period, but then everything is comfortable. Of course, to be able to enjoy them you will have to make a minimum investment of approximately €100.
