The CEOE criticizes Calviño's observatory of business margins as "interventionist"

The employers continue with their confrontation with the Government, also in relation to the margins that the companies are obtaining. If on Tuesday, the First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño, announced from Washington the creation of an observatory of business margins, this Wednesday the president of the CEOE, Antonio Garamendi, has described the instrument as interventionist. "If what we are talking about is more interventionism, then we will not share the issue," declared Garamendi, who stressed that companies "have to make money." Regarding the observatory in question on the margins, the president of the businessmen asked himself "which ones, how is it measured, who is going to do it?", adding that he hopes that it is not "an interventionist policy in the work of a company".

He has also complained that it is another announcement and another measure that he finds out about through the media. Therefore, it will wait to know the details to be able to assess it. So far, he said, the Government has not considered it.

When announcing the creation of this observatory, Calviño said that "it is very important to maintain effective competition in the goods and services markets and a distribution of income and for this we are going to reinforce monitoring by creating an observatory of business margins." It is about institutionalizing and following up on the analysis work that is already being carried out by the Bank of Spain, the Ministry of Finance and the INE, with the aim of achieving "greater transparency and quality of information in a fundamental area at this time for making appropriate decisions in economic policy”.
