Less than two years ago we learned about McLaren's new vehicle called Artura, the company's first series production hybrid supercar. It was a very special coupe based on the new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) platform and using the British brand's first electronic locking differential. It was a model that marked a before and after, like its successor, presented this week.
And so, the family grows and a new brother arrives. The Artura Spider is McLaren's first open-top car with hybrid technology and is an updated version of the Artura that uses a retractable hardtop body for an extraordinary sporty feel.
It is a fully driver-oriented supercar that combines the fluidity of electrified driving with the gasoline-powered power at its racing heart. To do this, it uses very light materials in its design and incorporates the latest in technology.
The Artura Spider stands out for its carbon fiber monocoque chassis. On the other hand, it has a combination of a 3.0-liter V6 combustion engine with an eight-speed transmission and a motor driven by electricity from a battery with five lithium-ion modules and a capacity of 7.4 kWh. Both engines generate a total of 700 HP and 720 Nm of maximum torque.
McLaren claims the new Artura is the most efficient convertible it has ever made, consuming just 4.8 liters per 100 kilometres. It has a range in fully electric mode of 33 kilometers. The acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h is just 3 seconds, while the maximum speed reaches 330 km/h.
The car's braking system is made up of carbon-ceramic discs, aluminum calipers and new cooling ducts. This allows it to come to a complete stop from 100 km/h in a distance of 31 meters.
An important goal for McLaren engineers when designing the Spider version of the Artura was to keep the weight as low as possible. And they have, as the brand announces that the new model is “the lightest convertible supercar in its class.”
Weighing 1,457kg, the McLaren Artura Spider is only 62kg heavier than its coupe sibling due to the electrically operated retractable hardtop mechanism. This can be retracted in just 11 seconds, even when the car is traveling at speeds of 50 km/h.
Regarding driving assistance systems, it is equipped as standard with blind spot and cross traffic detection systems, traffic sign recognition and involuntary lane departure warning. At the exterior design level, up to 33 color options are available, including some completely new ones.
It is now possible to place orders for the new McLaren model, which will begin to be delivered in the middle of this year at a price that starts at 273,800 euros.
