Iberdrola will build a green ammonia plant in southern Europe

Iberdrola will build the first green ammonia plant in southern Europe. The project aspires to capture a part of the European funds and will involve an investment of 750 million euros, according to the company advanced yesterday, although it did not detail the location.

The operation, which will involve the sale of up to 100,000 tons of green ammonia per year from 2026, is part of the framework agreement signed by the Spanish multinational with Trammo, the world's largest maritime marketer and distributor of anhydrous ammonia (pure, without water). . This is the largest project of its kind in Europe to date.

Iberdrola is currently developing green ammonia and methanol plants in Europe, the United States and Australia, among other countries, as part of the company's strategy to establish itself as a benchmark in the global growth of green hydrogen and its derivative products.

The construction of this green ammonia plant in a country to be specified in southern Europe will generate up to 3,500 jobs, occupied mostly by local workers, explained Iberdrola. In addition, during its operation and maintenance phase, the project will create more than 50 jobs.

The future green ammonia plant is also linked to the construction of 500 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy so that the final product meets the requirements demanded by the European Union.

Trammo will be in charge of acquiring and marketing the green ammonia to decarbonize various energy-intensive heavy industries across the continent, such as the Netherlands, Germany or France.
