Do you want to travel by motorhome in winter? You can't miss these accessories

Traveling with our house on wheels can be as exciting in winter as in any other season of the year, as long as we are prepared. To do this, the first thing is that our camper, motorhome or caravan has adequate maintenance and all inspections are up to date.

In this sense, it is essential to check that all the fluids are at the level, that the lights and windshield wipers work correctly and that the tires are in perfect condition and have the appropriate pressure. Inside, pay special attention to the temperature of the tanks so that they do not freeze and get specific products to take care of the plumbing. Don't forget to bring propane gas cylinders rather than butane ones (since the latter freezes) and check that the stationary heating works properly.

Likewise, the ideal is to reserve a storage space to carry some key accessories on hand to deal with the situations we may face with low temperatures. Among others: some tweezers, a flashlight or headlight, a scraper (better if it has an extendable handle), some basic tools, a shovel and winter chains that, we recommend, are metal. A secondary battery and even a portable generator will not hurt either to ensure energy independence during the trip.

On the other hand, depending on the places where we are going to travel, and the activities we want to do outdoors, we will also have to equip ourselves appropriately. Thus, it is advisable to prepare your suitcase very well, thinking about the climate and including comfortable and warm clothing - if it is technical clothing, better, as it will weigh us down and take up less space -, several waterproof garments, gloves, hat, socks and appropriate footwear.

Apart from these basic accessories for our motorhome and for us, in the market we can find more and more gadgets that can make our trip especially comfortable during the coldest time of the year: from the most practical ones for our daily life, to the more original.

1. Protectors for windows and doors: to avoid heat loss, invest in specific protectors for windows and doors such as isothermal awnings. You can find them in specialized stores or online stores, for less than 20 euros. Don't forget a protector to prevent the windshield from freezing, which can cost between 30 and 50 euros.

2. Thermal sleeping bag or duvet: If you prefer a sleeping bag, look for models designed for low temperatures that are compact to save space. In camping stores you can find quality ones between 60 and 80 euros. You can also opt for thicker bedding and/or duvets, an extra blanket and even hot water bottles.

3. Portable drink warmer: If you don't feel like turning on the stove every time you want to have a hot drink, get yourself a practical USB heater. You can buy them in electronics stores for less than 20 euros. There are also fast USB coffee makers for the most gourmets, although these go up a little more in price.

4. Water heater: in motorhomes the need for a hot shower in any circumstance is normally resolved with gas water heaters, but in smaller campers a good alternative will be to install a “boiler” or heater (either gas or electric).

5. Insulation kits for cold spots: you can increase the insulation of cold spots in your vehicle such as the floor with rugs or carpets. They are not expensive, and if you choose a washable model, it will be a very practical removable solution.

With the right preparation and a few essential add-ons, your home on wheels will become a warm sanctuary in the dead of winter. So don't stay at home, enjoy the fairy-tale landscapes that both Spain and the rest of Europe hide in the coldest time of the year and make the most of the snow season.
