Audi Q3 Sportback 40 TDI 200 CV, a good example of diesel virtuosity

The 2021 version of the Audi Q3 Sportback debuted a mechanical evolution for the 40 TDI variant that increased power from 190 to 200 HP and placed its engine torque at an impressive 400 Nm. After tweaking the top-of-the-range diesel engine of the compact SUV with the four rings, it was possible not only to improve its performance (224 km/h top speed and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds) but also In addition, its average consumption stood at 6.6 liters, also managing to exceed the Euro 6d regulations.

With all this, the Q3 reinforced its traditional virtues: sportiness, versatility and efficiency, forming an interesting option for customers who still trust their mobility -out of necessity or personal preference- to vehicles with conventional propulsion systems and diesel fuel. Option, on the other hand, happily criticized and scorned by many but still highly recommended for certain users.

The technology contained in the current TDI mechanics of the VW Group has been perfected and refined to levels that reflect excellent performance, both in figures –on paper– and in sensations (in real driving). It is, perhaps, the final stage of these engines, without a doubt. But it is also the high point of its viability and suitability for those who do a high number of kilometers per year and who want to combine forceful power figures with moderate consumption records.

In our test run, of about 275 km, we were able to verify how the energy requirements of the Q3 40 TDI were adjusted to completely reasonable values based on use, with routes at an "intensive" pace in urban environments, curved roads and abundant sections of considerable demand (mountain roads with steep slopes). Under these circumstances, average consumption was between 8.6 and 8.9 liters, reaching specific values of up to 11.6 liters at times of greatest demand for power and after markedly dynamic and performance driving.

It is not ruled out, therefore, deploying a more ecological driving, stay around -or below- 7 liters, a frankly favorable data for a motorization with 200 CV and a vehicle of about 1,800 kg in running order. This translates into potential ranges of between 600 and 800 km with a deposit, which for users who use their vehicle on long-distance trips makes the ownership experience easier and simpler, limiting reports and enabling long runs between visits to the service stations.

In relation to the behavior of the sportiest diesel variant of the Q3 range, it is worth noting its excellent dynamic performance. The sensation of thrust of this mechanic is very evident from low turns. Once a certain initial “vacuum” has been overcome, after crossing the 1,200-1,300 rpm barrier, the engine begins to stretch and deliver power constantly and abundantly, achieving a forceful sensation with a more than notable “kick” until over 4,000 laps. Despite its diesel nature, there is no denying the sportiness of this engine, which offers optimal sensations and even a pleasant sound and not without a certain acoustic "attractiveness", without obviously reaching the refinement of a gasoline.

We must also highlight the contribution made by the 7-speed s line gearbox, with proper management of the gears, impeccable operation and with the only criticism being that the paddles on the steering wheel are too small, made of plastic and with a touch and a sound that detracts from the whole. The "click" after each performance (as happens with the sound of the turn signals in some cars) we could say that it is not up to expectations since it does not convey all the sportiness and quality that other components of a firm such as Audi evoke. .

And, the icing on the cake of this successful mechanical and dynamic combination that the brand proposes for the highest-performance diesel Q3 SB is the quattro all-wheel drive. This diesel variant – which amounts to a not inconsiderable 56,230 euros – cannot be configured with any specification other than the 200 hp engine, automatic transmission and all-wheel drive of the brand. But it is precisely the combination of all these factors that ends up being so convincing.

The effectiveness of this device is not a discovery, but it is appreciated to have such a high traction capacity to be able to extract better performance from such a full engine. Coming out of curves with impetus and without the slightest risk of loss of motor skills, precise, safe and consistent steering, without corrections or hesitation on the steering wheel, and excellent poise in all driving circumstances remind us that Audi's quattro drive It is worth every euro it costs, not only for safety, but also for the enjoyment it provides, the versatility of use it provides and the consistency it brings to the vehicle, whether it is dry, on wet roads or on tracks and paths.

In short, the Q3 Sportback 40 TDI 200 CV quattro S line is a stark reminder of the unfair prejudices against diesel engines and their indiscriminate demonization. There are still exceptionally useful, practical, efficient and convincing options based on diesel. It should be remembered more than ever at a time when in order to save and be sustainable it seems that we must necessarily opt only for plug-in hybrid variants or electrified mechanics. TDI engines still have a lot to say and this Q3, unbeatable in many ways, is good proof of that...
