Who is Taraneh Alidoosti, the Iranian actress jailed for her opposition to executions?

It is not the first time that the young 38-year-old Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti (Tehran, 1984) has made headlines around the world for reasons unrelated to her own career, although she did make use of it. In 2017, she, the leading actress in The Salesman, a film nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film by the prestigious Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, announced her boycott of the awards ceremony in response to the veto decreed by the then President Donald Trump, to the entry of citizens of Iran and other Muslim-majority countries into the United States.

His artistic vein probably comes from the maternal side of the family. His mother, Nadere Hakimelahi, is a sculptor and art teacher. His father, Hamid Alidoosti, now a professional soccer coach, played for the Iran national team for a long time and was the first Iranian to play for a European soccer club after the revolution, scoring 15 goals in 27 national matches.

Taraneh Alidoosti's fighting spirit was already highlighted by critics after her film debut in 2002 with Rasul Sadr Ameli's Ta I'm Taraneh, 15, her great film success. At 17, she received widespread acclaim for portraying a defiant 15-year-old who, after a failed relationship, is determined to raise her child on her own, while battling poverty and social stigma.

A computer graduate, Taraneh Alidoosti began her artistic career in 2000 as a student at Amin Tarokh's acting school. Barely two years later, she entered through the front door of the cinema with that Ta I'm Taraneh, 15, reaping several important awards in just one month: the Bronze Leopard for Best Actress at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2002; the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actress at the 20th Fajr Film Festival; her first nomination for the best actress award from the Fajr Film Festival (a nomination she has received three times in a row); chosen by the critics as the best actress for the leading role in with Ta I'm Taraneh, 15...

After this spectacular debut, it took him almost three years to reappear on the big screen, a lapse that those close to him have always attributed to his extremely selective criteria. He did so under the direction of Asghar Farhadi in The Beautiful City (Shahr-e ziba -2004), a director with whom he worked again in 2006 on Fireworks Wednesday, About Elly (2009) and on numerous occasions until the Oscar-winning The Salesman.

Very little has come out of his private life. Just that she was married from 2011 to 2016 to Ali Mansoori and has a daughter, Hana, in addition to the tragic death of her brother Pouyan, who died at just 16 years old due to an explosion during the Iranian fire festival in March 2005. And now, Taraneh Alidoosti is in jail, for saying something that is not allowed in Iran.
