Hello, I would like to know if I can eat more than one package of boiled green asparagus every day. Also, I want to know how it would make me less fat, fresh or canned. I always think canned, because the sodium can increase my weight, is that right? Thank you (Mirna Angelina Chalub, reader)

Hello Mirna,

If there is no specific digestive contraindication there would be no problem in taking asparagus daily. Asparagus, being stems, have a very high amount of fiber and specifically cellulose, as well as fructose and fructans, which means that they can cause digestive problems in people who are predisposed to them, or who have a diagnosed digestive condition. If they feel good to you, you can maintain their regular consumption.

In any case, I would also recommend that you include several vegetables on a daily basis, both for seasonality (asparagus is not always available) and for diversity of nutrients, since although asparagus is interesting, it is desirable to include vegetables in a variety of ways.

At the level of its relationship with weight gain, you would not have to worry about either of the two options, neither fresh nor canned, the caloric intake of asparagus, like many other vegetables, is minimal, and both grilled, boiled and Canned are good options.

The sodium content of canned asparagus is also moderate and does not present a problem except for people who have to keep a close eye on sodium. In any case, this would never be related to being overweight, but rather to hypertension or fluid retention.

However, and even being a preserve with some salt, it is important to remember that canned vegetables, due to their high fiber and potassium content, are still indicated in these cases and it is not a priority to restrict them. They can be a very good tool to eat more vegetables.

It makes more sense to be careful not to accompany them with sauces such as mayonnaise and béchamel, which often come in dishes with white asparagus.

Hello good. What oil is as healthy as olive oil now that the price has skyrocketed? (Paco Gomez, reader)

Hello Paco,

Well, unfortunately there is no other oil that is at the level of beneficial effects for health like olive oil.

A possible alternative that can be done is to buy virgin olive oil, dry, instead of extra virgin, since the health properties are practically similar and the "extra" is usually found in the organoleptic properties (taste and aroma).

It is also true that there is usually not much difference in price between these two oils, and the savings would be minimal.

My recommendation would be to keep olive oil at home, and if you want to make a small sacrifice, at least choose conventional olive oil for cooking, and reserve the virgin and extra virgin versions to eat raw.

I also take this opportunity to remember that oil has a great impact on our health and that it is a food that we are going to use transversally for several weeks. Surely we can find some other savings on the menu that does not affect such an important fat, that price difference is what we can lose in three coffees throughout the month, or a couple of beers away from home.

Of course, I am not wanting to say that you have to abandon those moments, but that the money invested in olive oil is very profitable because we use it constantly for many days, and that gives us important protection for our health.
