"What happened?": the cry of pain of the relatives of the victims of the shipwreck in Santander

The minute of silence held this Tuesday in memory of the victims of the Vilaboa Uno shipwreck off the coast of Santander has become a cry of pain from relatives and residents of the fishing district, who denounce a lack of information. The event has brought together politicians from all over Cantabria, led by the regional president, Miguel Ángel Revilla, and the mayoress of Santander, Gema Igual, who have come together in front of the pier where the Vilaboa Uno docked on Sunday night for the last time, before going out to work.

It has developed in a tense manner, with the relatives of the fatalities, a resident of the Santander neighborhood and a sailor from Ghana and those of the crew member of Peruvian origin who remains missing, denouncing a lack of information from the regional authorities. "What happened? Where is my brother? Where do we have to go to see my brother?" lamented the sister of one of the deceased in front of the media, to the applause of the neighbors.

This family denounces that they have not yet been able to see the body of the sailor, more than a day after his death was reported. Revilla has approached them to tell them that the Government of Cantabria has put "all the means available" to the community to rescue this Peruvian sailor; as well as the Government delegate, Ainoa Quiñones, who has informed them of the last hour of the search device.

For their part, hundreds of residents of the neighborhood have mourned the death of the sailors and have demanded that the search for the missing person not cease, a device that has been active for more than a day and that focuses on the interior of the ship, sunk 120 meters away. deep, where he could have been trapped according to the statements of the survivors. And they ask for more means to find him and expedite the judicial procedures so that the relatives of the deceased can say goodbye to them.

In statements to the media, the mayoress of Santander, who yesterday called a minute of silence and decreed official mourning for the city for three days, recalled "all the women who have been waiting for the sailors on many occasions." She has asked to improve the channels of information to the relatives to give them "tranquility and calm." "Hopefully they can be given that peace of mind", she has added.
