Waste recycling in Ponent is close to 43% in 2022, below the Catalan average

Recycling in the regions of Ponent, La Plana de Lleida, remains stagnant, the same as in Catalonia as a whole, according to the latest data for 2022, which puts selectively collected waste at 43.9% with a total of 67,617 tons .

It is 2% less compared to the 2021 financial year and more than one point below the Catalan average, which stands at 45.33%.

The director of the Catalan Waste Agency, Isaac Peraire, took stock this Wednesday in Lleida of municipal waste management, where he said that it is the municipalities, including large cities, that must lead the implementation of high efficiency models , as it takes it to the door or containers with a chip.

Agramunt, with the door-to-door system, leads the ranking of the best results with 89.35%.

The director of the Agència de Residus de Catalunya has explained that the country has been experiencing a general "stagnation" in terms of recycling for a few years, although he has been optimistic that this trend must be overcome. "We have the tools to do it," he said.

In this sense, Peraire has highlighted the essential role of citizens to improve the percentage of selective collection, but also of city councils to facilitate the work of neighbors and industries to produce products "that generate less waste or do not generate." .

Specifically, he said that it is necessary to move towards efficient selective collection systems such as door-to-door or closed containers with user identification. He added that municipalities, including large cities, must opt for these systems and that they have the support of the Agency and the Government to do so.

Ponent data shows that still more than half of the municipal waste generated is not collected selectively. The 86,354 tons of the rest fraction collected represent 56.1% of the tons generated, decreasing by 3.7% compared to the previous year.

Of the six counties of Ponent, four exceed the average percentage of selective collection in Catalonia (45.33%). They are Segarra (54.80%), Urgell (50.91%), Garrigues (47.59%) and Pla d'Urgell (46.77%). On the contrary, the least recycling is in Noguera (43.63%) and Segrià (40.62%).

As for municipalities, the towns with the highest recycling rate are those that have implemented the door-to-door system.

Agramunt leads the ranking (89.35%), followed by Castellserà (86.44%), Alcarràs (78.07%), Alguaire (76.48%) and Granja d'Escarp (75.58%).

On the contrary, in the five towns with the worst results there is the system of open containers. These are Almacelles (25.65%), Maldà (29.24%), Fuliola (29.94%), Guimerà (30.36%) and Baronía de Rialb (30.59%).

With regard to the four main selective collection fractions, the recycling of light packaging and glass has increased compared to the previous year. 3.4% more light packaging and 3.2% more glass were collected. On the contrary, organic has decreased by 3.6% compared to 2021 and paper and cardboard has decreased by 2.2%.

According to the new accounting without debris, in 2022 in Ponent a total of 153,971 tons of municipal waste have been generated, 3% less than in 2021.

Per capita waste generation decreases by 3.4% and stands at 418 kilos per person per year without accounting for debris. With the debris this figure is 427 kilos and the decrease is 3.5%.
