Tourism already generates 6% more employment than before the pandemic

The number of jobs in the tourism sector stands at 2.86 million, which represents not only an increase of 5.4% compared to the previous year, but also 6.3% compared to 2019, before the start of the pandemic. , according to Turespaña data released today by the Ministry of Labour.

The figures correspond to the EPA for the second quarter, between April and June, and show an increase in the weight of this sector in the Spanish economy as a whole. There are already, between employed and unemployed, 3.13 million active workers linked to tourism, after, of the 589,000 new jobs generated in the quarter, a quarter have come from this activity.

In the Spanish economy as a whole, 13.6% of employment is now tourism. The sector also registers an unemployment rate of 8.5%, lower than the general rate of 11.6%, and has been chaining improvements for four consecutive quarters.

The Ministry of Industry also highlights that workers in the tourism sector with an indefinite contract are now 80.4%, after having increased by 18%. On the other hand, temporary contracts fell by 19.9%, while the number of self-employed workers fell by 6%.

"The labor market around tourism has shown tremendous resilience and performance despite the uncertainty generated by inflation and Russia's invasion of Ukraine," says Industry Minister Héctor Gómez.

Catalonia, which continues to be the autonomous community that generates the most employment of this type, with 487,314 workers, was one of the regions that increased it the most in the quarter, 7.2%. It is followed by Andalusia, with 454,304 employees and an increase of 3.4%, ahead of Madrid, which has 440,033 workers, 3.7% more.

There are, however, some autonomous communities in which the number of workers linked to tourism has decreased, especially the Valencian Community, where the decline has been 4%, up to 279,779 employees. It is close to being overtaken by the Canary Islands, which adds 271,204, 10% more.

Catalonia is, with 18.9%, the autonomous community with the highest percentage of self-employed workers as a whole. Only Andalusia comes close, with 15%, and Madrid, with 12%.
