Three parishioners prevent the theft of a chalice in a church in Orihuela

A 37-year-old man has been arrested by the National Police accused of trying to steal the chalice from the church of Santiago Apóstol in the Alicante town of Orihuela and of assaulting three parishioners.

The police force explained this Wednesday that the agents were alerted last Friday by a call from a witness and, upon arrival, they found the suspect struggling with a woman and two men, who were trying to prevent the man from fleeing the place, as that seconds before they had caught him trying to steal valuables from the main altar.

The witnesses assured that the man had extracted a golden chalice from a locked box that the author in question would have found after searching the altar.

According to the testimony of the witnesses, when he was reproached for said attitude, the author pushed the witness to be able to flee the place and later struggled with two men, all of them parishioners, who tried to prevent him from taking what was stolen, and at that moment The National Police arrived.

The detainee, with a police record for crimes against property, was transferred to National Police units, while two people had to be treated for minor injuries.
