The worst omens are confirmed with Gavi: out for between 6 and 8 months

The latest tests carried out on Gavi have confirmed that the Blaugrana midfielder suffers an injury to the cruciate ligaments in his right knee and that the external meniscus is also affected. The club reported this Monday at noon that he will undergo surgery in the coming days and it will be after the operation that the recovery period, which will be around 8 months, can be established.

The footballer was treated this morning by the FC Barcelona medical services at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, where he arrived after eleven in the morning accompanied by his agent, Ivan de la Peña, and left an hour later. There, the doctors have performed all the pertinent tests to confirm the severity of his injury.

The Andalusian midfielder returned to Barcelona yesterday morning. He landed after three in the morning at the El Prat private flight terminal accompanied by his teammate at FC Barcelona Iñigo Martínez and the sports director of the Spanish team, Albert Luque.

Gavi was injured last night during the Spain-Georgia match at Nuevo Zorrilla. He was in the 23rd minute of the game when he jumped and twisted his knee in a bad gesture that foreshadowed the worst. Shortly before, he had received a strong blow to the same knee from Georgian defender Luka Lochoshvili. He tried to continue, but it was impossible, the pain did not allow him to continue and he had to be replaced.

He left the field of play in tears and the first examinations were not at all promising. He left the stadium on crutches and from the locker room they explained that the 19-year-old was completely devastated, unable to hold back his tears and asking himself over and over again “Why me?” The rest of his teammates and the coach himself were also dejected: “It is the most bitter victory of my career,” Luis de la Fuente even said.

With the worst omens confirmed, Barça says goodbye to Gavi for the remainder of the season and the Sevillian center back would also miss the Euro Cup that starts on June 14. His participation in the Paris Olympic Games (at the end of July) would also be in jeopardy.

Xavi Hernández is left without one of the most important players in his squad who had accumulated 21 games this season with FC Barcelona, playing around 1,600 minutes. He must study the possibilities he has of incorporating some reinforcement in the winter market, as long as fair play allows it.

In return, the Blaugrana club will receive significant financial compensation from FIFA. This organization stipulates in its Player Protection Program that after 28 days of inactivity of a footballer due to injury, his club has the right to receive the amount of 20,548 euros for each day he is still out. Taking into account that Gavi would be out of the playing field for at least six months, the Catalan club would receive between three and four million euros for his injury.
