The day the Government agreed with ERC to forgive 20% of the Catalan debt with the Autonomous Liquidity Fund (FLA) among the agreements for the investiture, the PP barons charged like the Napoleonic troops in the last movie by Ridley Scott. The first to come out in a rush with their swords raised were the Valencian Carlos Mazón (“it creates an unfair division between communities”), the Extremaduran María Guardiola (“it grants privileges incompatible with the Constitution”) and the Castilian-León Alfonso Fernández Mañueco (“we will go to the courts). María Jesús Montero, the head of the Treasury, lacked time to clarify that all the autonomous communities could benefit from the measure. So there was no injustice, nor did it grant privileges, nor did it make sense to go to court.
But there is always a reason to complain in the age of confrontation. And then it was heard that whether the Government should have agreed to this measure at the meeting of regional presidents or whether it removed it was a way to whitewash the agreement with the independentists. Political scientist Christian Salmon already wrote that to conquer power the winning combination is to confront, transgress, be unpredictable and impose one's own truth.
However, the days have passed and the regional presidents have begun to make calculations about what is theirs. Debt forgiveness divides the PP, as its regional barons are now in favor of debt relief. Only the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, wages war on her behalf because she does not accumulate loans from the FLA, but rather debt with the banks, and allows herself to proclaim that this rescue is “distributing misery.” Misery? According to Fedea, it will mean reducing the regional debt by 88,000 million. Ayuso has a concept of misery that she should develop more widely.
The Government has created a mess for the PP without having to go out into the streets with flags. And the wallet waves higher and higher than any banner.
